The single biggest factor in whether a haircut flatters you is your face shape. The good news: you can work out your shape in two minutes at home, and once you know it, choosing a cut gets a lot easier. Here is how to measure it, and the styles that suit each of the six common shapes.
Pull your hair back, face a mirror, and look at four things: the width of your forehead, the width of your cheekbones, the width and angle of your jaw, and the overall length from hairline to chin.
Round faces are about as wide as they are long with a soft jaw. Oval faces are a touch longer than wide with balanced proportions. Square faces have a strong, angular jaw close to the forehead width. Heart faces are wider at the forehead and taper to a narrow chin. Long (oblong) faces are noticeably longer than wide. Diamond faces are widest at the cheekbones with a narrow forehead and chin.
Round: add length and height — long layers, lobs and side parts. Oval: the most versatile shape, most cuts work, so choose for your hair texture. Square: soften the jaw with waves, soft layers and curtain bangs. Heart: balance a wider forehead with chin-length volume and side-swept fringe. Long: add width and shorten with blunt lengths, fringe and waves. Diamond: show off the cheekbones with chin-length styles and soft fringe.
