About this look

The Catrina flower crown is the hair half of the Day of the Dead Catrina look: long, glossy waves with a center part under a full crown of bright orange marigolds and deep red roses. La Calavera Catrina began as a 1910s etching by José Guadalupe Posada and has become one of the best-loved icons of Día de los Muertos, celebrated in Mexico on November 1 and 2. Marigolds — cempasúchil — are the holiday's signature flower.

It flatters oval, round, heart, and oblong faces — the crown adds width at the temples while the waves soften the jaw. Every texture works: straight hair can be waved with a large curling iron, and curly and coily hair look striking with the crown set right on top of natural volume. Shoulder length or longer gives the waves room to fall.

Medium styling effort — set soft waves, then pin a wired flower crown across the top from ear to ear and tuck a few single blooms behind one ear. Allow 20–30 minutes. Many people pair the hair with Catrina face paint; others keep the face natural and let the flowers carry the look. Glossy waves under marigolds and roses; festive and full of color.

Styling — soft center-parted waves with a wired marigold-and-rose flower crown pinned across the top; tuck a few single blooms behind one ear.
